About Glacier Bear Construction

Glacier Bear Construction is a family-owned general contractor in Juneau, Alaska — founded by a local, run by locals, and built to last past the first generation.

The Story Behind Glacier Bear Construction

Kinnon Scharen didn't move to Juneau to start a construction company. He grew up here, learned the trades here, and spent 22 years working in Southeast Alaska's construction industry before founding Glacier Bear Construction.

That background matters more than it might sound. Southeast Alaska's climate — the rainfall, the salt air, the snow loads, the persistent moisture that works its way into crawl spaces and wall cavities — does things to a home that contractors from the Lower 48 don't always anticipate. Kinnon has spent more than two decades learning exactly what this climate does and how to build against it.

Glacier Bear Construction is also a family business in the truest sense. Kinnon's sons are being brought up in the trades with the intention of becoming co-owners. The apprenticeship focus isn't just internal — it's part of a broader commitment to keeping skilled tradespeople in Juneau rather than watching them leave for larger markets.
